The biggest risk to a patio cover in Pflugerville is the ground under it. Houston Black clay swells when wet and shrinks in drought, so posts on shallow footings rise and drop and pull at the connection to your house. We set footings below the active zone and move the roof water away from your foundation.
A patio cover is fixed to your house at one end and sitting on its own footings at the other. On clay, if those footings move and the house slab moves differently, the ledger connection takes the strain. That is how covers pull away from walls and flashing starts leaking.
We drill post footings below the zone where the clay swells and shrinks, and we do not rest posts on the patio slab, which moves with the surface soil. That work is included in every quote, not an upgrade.
A 240 square foot roof sheds a lot of water in a Central Texas downpour, and on clay that water should not soak in next to your foundation. We gutter the cover and run downspouts out to where the yard drains, or into an existing drain line if you have one.
The patio slab itself should slope away from the house. Many builder slabs in Falcon Pointe, Blackhawk, and Avalon do, but some have settled flat or toward the back door. We check before we build.
Most Pflugerville yards get full sun with few mature trees. An aluminum cover is the most economical way to shade the patio: a 12x20 typically runs $15,000 to $22,000. If the patio faces west and you plan to sit out on summer evenings, insulated panels are worth the step up, $50 to $80 per square foot installed versus $25 to $40 for aluminum.
Permits are issued by the City of Pflugerville, and most neighborhoods here also require HOA approval. We file both.
Lots near Lake Pflugerville and the open fields around newer subdivisions often get a steady breeze. A cover open to that breeze stays cooler, so we look at wind direction as well as sun when we set the roof slope and open sides.
The cheapest time to add ceiling fans and lights to a patio cover is before the roof goes on. On an aluminum cover, wiring can run inside the beams or in a channel along them. Once the cover is finished, adding a fan often means exposed conduit and possibly another permit.
Even if the budget only covers the roof this year, we can install fan-rated boxes and pull the wire now, so a fan goes up later in an afternoon. Fans matter here: most Pflugerville patios get full afternoon sun, and moving air is what makes a shaded patio comfortable in July. The electrical work is included in the permit we file with the City of Pflugerville.
Pflugerville sits on Blackland Prairie clay, some of the most expansive soil in Central Texas. Most homes here were built in the last few decades on standard suburban lots, and most sit in an HOA. The clay is what makes a Pflugerville deck or patio cover last or fail, so footing design comes first. We build decks, covered patios, pergolas, gazebos and screened porches across Pflugerville.
Permits, HOAs, soil and local building tips for Pflugerville
"Pflugerville is black clay. It swells up when it's wet and cracks open when it's dry, and it'll pick up a shallow footing and move it. So we go deeper and keep water away. Yards here are mostly standard size, which is good for a covered patio off the back door. That's the project we get asked about most."

In Texas, an uncovered south- or west-facing patio is unusable 6 months of the year. It's simply too hot. A properly designed patio cover can reduce temperatures underneath by 20-30 degrees and cut your home cooling costs by blocking direct sun on windows and doors. It transforms dead space into living space.
A patio cover blocking afternoon sun on windows and doors can noticeably reduce your AC load. We have had customers report 15-20% drops in summer electric bills.
With proper design, your covered patio becomes a three-season room - or four seasons with added features. Rain, shine, or Texas heat, you'll use this space.
We coordinate gas lines, electrical, and plumbing during construction. Want a built-in grill, refrigerator, or pizza oven? We plan the infrastructure from day one.
Proper attachment requires structural engineering specific to your home. We handle the calculations, permits, and inspections - protecting your home and your investment.
